short entry today because i have a half day.......but i have a dilemma and i really need as much help and advice as i can possibly get with it.

because where i work is classed as a government department, when you start work here you have to sign something called "The Data Protection Act" (it used to be called the Official Secrets Act). basically it means that any information i find out about anyone within the four walls of the office i cannot repeat to anyone outside of the office. if its something i find out outside of work it makes no difference who i tell. i could phone up the local TV station and announce it and it wouldnt matter. but things between these four walls........they are secrets.

for example, say a customer came in and had just been released from prison for murdering their wife. and then i saw them out on a Saturday night. i couldnt then turn to my friend and say "see that bloke? he just got out of prison for murdering his wife"

however, if it was on the front page of the newspaper and i found it out from there, i could tell her (presuming she hadnt already seen it).

are we clear on my work rules now? good.

I am in charge of keeping a record in the office, of all customers that have infectious diseases. obviously working here, we have a lot of drug addicts etc, that claim sickness benefit, and have all sorts of nasty diseases, like HIV, Hepatitis, scabies, and all manner of other lovely things. because we sometimes have to send people out to visit them, we need to be aware of this so we can be extra careful when coming into contact with them. some of them are really nasty and spit at us and allsorts, so its important to be aware of who has what. to continue claiming sickness benefit, each customer has to provide medical evidnece, which states on it what infections that they have. when these come into the office i check them, and any that have one of the notifiable diseases, i put in my little book for future reference.

i hope this is all making sense.

i recieved a medical certificate off of a girly last week that had one of these notifiable diseases. we will call her Girly X. first of all it didnt seem that importnant, i just put her in the book with the rest of them. the infection she had was one that i thought could only be passed by blood to blood contact (although after further research it turns out it can be sexually transmitted also)

now none of this would matter. except for the fact that one of my friends slept with her the other week. we will call him My Mate. now, on the night in question Girly X was all over My Mate like a rash, even though i warned him several times that she was a heroin user and also an ex-prostitute (facts that i had found out from outside of work, so i wasnt breaking the Data Protection Act) My Mate however, was hammered, and when he is hammered (or indeed any other time for that matter) he gets the slightest hint of getting laid, and he is off like a shot. i did nt know at the time that Girly X had this nasty disease.

The disease she has got, although not detectable immediately, if left untreated can do lots of nasty damage. if it goes on being untreated (e.g. subject doesnt know they have it) can be fatal.

so what do i do? i know for a fact he wouldnt have used a condom, because My Mate wouldnt know a condom if it came and sat on his shoulder and introduced itself. he has probably seen them before and thinks they are a kind of sweet or something. i know i should really tell him, but if he goes apeshit and confronts her, and it somehow gets back to me, then i could lose my job. i know that sounds really selfish, but my job is my life. if i lost it i would be well and truly fucked.

but then if i dont tell him, he cant get himself checked out and if he has got it, he could become really ill. and the other thing is, i know what he is like. and even if i do tell him, there is a chance he would say he had been to get it checked and he's fine, but really he wont hav gone. he would be so worried he would just deny it to himself, and put it to the back of his mind (and yes, probably spread it around more, because that is the knind of selfish thing he would do) then i would have risked it all for nothing.

what do i do?
